I heard Abu Wahb say, I heard Makhul say:I was a slave in Egypt belonging to a woman from Banu Huzayl, and she set me free. I did not leave Egypt until I had acquired, as I believe, all the knowledge that was in it. Then I came to the Hijaz, and I did not leave it until I had acquired, as I believe, all the knowledge that was in it. Then I came to Iraq, and I did not leave it until I had acquired, as I believe, all the knowledge that was in it. Then I came to Sham and sifted through it thoroughly. Throughout all of this I was asking about the extra share of war booty, but I could not find anyone to tell me anything about it, until I met a sheikh called Ziyad bin Jariya al-Tamimi.I asked him, "Have you heard anything about the extra share of war booty?"He replied, "Yes. I heard Habib bin Maslama al-Fihri say, 'I witnessed the Prophet ﷺ grant a quarter as an extra share on the outward march and a third on the return.'"

سمعت أبا وهب يقول سمعت مكحولا يقول كنت عبدا بمصر لامرأة من بني هذيل فأعتقتني فما خرجت من مصر وبها علم إلا حويت عليه فيما أرى ثم أتيت الحجاز فما خرجت منها وبها علم إلا حويت عليه فيما أرى ثم أتيت العراق فما خرجت منها وبها علم إلا حويت عليه فيما أرى ثم أتيت الشام فغربلتها كل ذلك أسأل عن النفل فلم أجد أحدا يخبرني فيه بشيء حتى لقيت شيخا يقال له زياد بن جارية التميمي فقلت له هل سمعت في النفل شيئا قال نعم سمعت حبيب بن مسلمة الفهري يقول شهدت النبي ﷺ نفل الربع في البدأة والثلث في الرجعة
