Dahhak bin Qays intended to appoint Masruq to a position, but Umarah bin Uqba said to him, "Are you appointing a man who is among the remnants of Uthman's killers?"Masruq replied to him, "Abdullah bin Masud, whose narrations we held to be trustworthy, told us that when the Prophet ﷺ was about to have your father executed, your father asked, 'Who will care for the children?' The Prophet ﷺ answered, 'The Fire.' So I am content for you with what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was content for you."
[Its chain of transmission is daif] Bayhaqi transmitted it in Dalail Nubuwwah 6/397 from the hadith of Abu Dawud with this chain. This hadith has many routes, found in Al-Iqd al-Tamam fi Takhrij al-Sirah li-Ibn Hisham, page 265, which Allah made easy for me to publish. Ibrahim Nakhai is a mudallis, and he used the ambiguous form "an", and the hadith has corroborating narrations, all of them daif.
