The Prophet ﷺ said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out ten scouts and placed Asim bin Thabit in command over them. Huzayl mobilized about a hundred archers against them. When Asim sensed their approach, the scouts took refuge on a hill.The pursuers said to them, "Come down and surrender. You have our pledge and covenant that we will not kill any of you."Asim replied, "As for me, I will not come down under the protection of a disbeliever."So they shot arrows at them and killed Asim along with seven others. Three men came down to them on the basis of the pledge and covenant, among them Khubayb, Zayd bin Dathinnah, and another man. But once the captors had them in their power, they untied their bowstrings and bound them with them.The third man said, "This is the first act of treachery. By Allah, I will not accompany you. I have in these slain men an example to follow." They dragged him along, but he refused to go with them, so they killed him.Khubayb remained a prisoner until they resolved to kill him. He borrowed a razor to remove his pubic hair. When they brought him out to kill him, Khubayb said to them, "Let me pray two units of prayer." Then he said, "By Allah, were it not that you would think I was showing fear, I would have prayed longer."
حدثنا موسى بن إسمعيل حدثنا إبراهيم يعني ابن سعد أخبرنا ابن شهاب أخبرني عمرو بن جارية الثقفي حليف بني زهرة
عن النبي ﷺ قال بعث رسول الله ﷺ عشرة عينا وأمر عليهم عاصم بن ثابت فنفروا لهم هذيل بقريب من مائة رجل رام فلما أحس بهم عاصم لجئوا إلى قردد فقالوا لهم انزلوا فأعطوا بأيديكم ولكم العهد والميثاق أن لا نقتل منكم أحدا فقال عاصم أما أنا فلا أنزل في ذمة كافر فرموهم بالنبل فقتلوا عاصما في سبعة نفر ونزل إليهم ثلاثة نفر على العهد والميثاق منهم خبيب وزيد بن الدثنة ورجل آخر فلما استمكنوا منهم أطلقوا أوتار قسيهم فربطوهم بها فقال الرجل الثالث هذا أول الغدر والله لا أصحبكم إن لي بهؤلاء لأسوة فجروه فأبى أن يصحبهم فقتلوه فلبث خبيب أسيرا حتى أجمعوا قتله فاستعار موسى يستحد بها فلما خرجوا به ليقتلوه قال لهم خبيب دعوني أركع ركعتين ثم قال والله لولا أن تحسبوا ما بي جزعا لزدت
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Jihad and Expeditions, chapter "Should a man allow himself to be taken captive? And whoever does not allow himself to be taken captive," etc., hadith no. 3045, from the hadith of Ibn Shihab Zuhri through this same chain.
