Ali bin Abu Talib reported,
With this account, he said, Hatib set out and wrote to the people of Mecca that Muhammad ﷺ had marched against them.In it he said, she said, "I have no letter with me." So we searched her, but found no letter on her.Ali said, "By the One in whose name oaths are sworn, either I will kill you or you will produce the letter."And he continued the hadith.

بهذه القصة قال انطلق حاطب فكتب إلى أهل مكة أن محمدا ﷺ قد سار إليكم وقال فيه قالت ما معي كتاب فانتحيناها فما وجدنا معها كتابا فقال علي والذي يحلف به لأقتلنك أو لتخرجن الكتاب وساق الحديث

Its chain of transmission is sahih.It was narrated by Muslim in his Sahih, in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions, in the chapter on the virtues of Hatib bin Abu Balta and the people of Badr, number (2494), from the hadith of Khalid 
.Bukhari also narrated it in his Sahih, in the Book of Jihad and Expeditions, in the chapter titled "When a man is compelled..." etc., number (3081), from the hadith of Husayn, with the same wording.Looking into the hair of the people under protection.
