Jabir reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "War is deception."

Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Jihad and Expeditions, Chapter on War is Deception, hadith no. 3030, and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Jihad and Expeditions, Chapter on the Permissibility of Deception in War, hadith no. 1739, from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna as related here, and it is also found in Sunan Saeed bin Mansur, hadith no. 2889.
