He was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on one of his journeys when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out a messenger. Abdullah bin Abu Bakr said, "I think he said it was while the people were at their resting place." The message was that no necklace of bowstring nor any other necklace was to remain on the neck of any camel without being cut off.Malik said, "I believe this was on account of the evil eye."
حدثنا عبد الله بن مسلمة القعنبي عن مالك عن عبد الله بن أبي بكر بن محمد بن عمرو بن حزم عن عباد بن تميم أن
أنه كان مع رسول الله ﷺ في بعض أسفاره فأرسل رسول الله ﷺ رسولا قال عبد الله بن أبي بكر حسبت أنه قال والناس في مبيتهم لا يبقين في رقبة بعير قلادة من وتر ولا قلادة إلا قطعت قال مالك أرى أن ذلك من أجل العين
Bukhari narrated it in jihad and expeditions, chapter on what has been said about the bell and similar things around camels' necks, hadith no. 3005, and Muslim in clothing and adornment, chapter on the dislike of hanging a string of Witr around a camel's neck, hadith no. 2115, from the hadith of Malik through this route. It is also in the Muwatta (Yahya) 2/937.
