"If you do not march forth, He will punish you with a painful punishment" [Tawbah 9:39], and "It was not proper for the people of Madinah" up to His saying "they used to do" [Tawbah 9:120–121] were abrogated by the verse that follows them, "And the believers should not all go forth" [Tawbah 9:122].
