I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fasting during the ten days at all.
حدثنا مسدد حدثنا أبو عوانة عن الأعمش عن إبراهيم عن الأسود
ما رأيت رسول الله ﷺ صائما العشر قط
Muslim narrated it in itikaf, chapter on fasting the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, hadith 9/1176, from the hadith of Amash through this same chain.
