The people were looking out for the new crescent moon. I informed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that I had sighted it, so he fasted and ordered the people to fast.
حدثنا محمود بن خالد وعبد الله بن عبد الرحمن السمرقندي وأنا لحديثه أتقن قالا حدثنا مروان هو ابن محمد عن عبد الله بن وهب عن يحيى بن عبد الله بن سالم عن أبي بكر بن نافع عن أبيه
تراءى الناس الهلال فأخبرت رسول الله ﷺ أني رأيته فصامه وأمر الناس بصيامه
Its chain is sahih. Daraqutni narrated it in 2/156 from the hadith of Abu Dawud through it, and it is in the Sunan of Imam Darimi, Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman Samarqandi, no. 1698. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, no. 871, as did Hakim, 1/423.
