Umm Fadl, daughter of Harith, sent him to Muawiya in Syria. He said, "I arrived in Syria and completed her errand. The new moon of Ramadan appeared while I was still in Syria, and we sighted the crescent on Friday night. Then I returned to Medina at the end of the month, and Ibn Abbas questioned me." He then mentioned the crescent.Ibn Abbas asked, "When did you sight the crescent?"I replied, "We saw it on Friday night."He asked, "You saw it yourself?"I said, "Yes, and the people saw it and fasted, and Muawiya fasted as well."He said, "But we sighted it on Saturday night, so we will continue fasting until we complete thirty days or sight the next crescent."I asked, "Is the sighting and fasting of Muawiya not sufficient for you?"He answered, "No. This is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us."
حدثنا موسى بن إسمعيل حدثنا إسمعيل يعني ابن جعفر أخبرني محمد بن أبي حرملة
أن أم الفضل ابنة الحارث بعثته إلى معاوية بالشام قال فقدمت الشام فقضيت حاجتها فاستهل رمضان وأنا بالشام فرأينا الهلال ليلة الجمعة ثم قدمت المدينة في آخر الشهر فسألني ابن عباس ثم ذكر الهلال فقال متى رأيتم الهلال قلت رأيته ليلة الجمعة قال أنت رأيته قلت نعم ورآه الناس وصاموا وصام معاوية قال لكنا رأيناه ليلة السبت فلا نزال نصومه حتى نكمل الثلاثين أو نراه فقلت أفلا تكتفي برؤية معاوية وصيامه قال لا هكذا أمرنا رسول الله ﷺ
