My family married me to a Roman slave woman of theirs. I had relations with her and she gave birth to a black boy who looked like me, so I named him Abdullah. Then I had relations with her again and she gave birth to another black boy who looked like me, so I named him Ubaydullah.Then a Roman slave belonging to my family, called Yuhannah, became infatuated with her. He spoke to her in his own tongue, and she gave birth to a boy who looked like a little lizard.I asked her, "What is this?"She replied, "This one is from Yuhannah."We brought the matter before Uthman. I think the narrator said this was Mahdi. He questioned the two of them and they both confessed.Uthman said to them, "Are you content that I judge between you according to the ruling of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled that the child belongs to the bed."I think he said that Uthman then had her flogged and had him flogged as well, since they were both slaves.

زوجني أهلي أمة لهم رومية فوقعت عليها فولدت غلاما أسود مثلي فسميته عبد الله ثم وقعت عليها فولدت غلاما أسود مثلي فسميته عبيد الله ثم طبن لها غلام لأهلي رومي يقال له يوحنه فراطنها بلسانه فولدت غلاما كأنه وزغة من الوزغات فقلت لها ما هذا فقالت هذا ليوحنه فرفعنا إلى عثمان أحسبه قال مهدي قال فسألهما فاعترفا فقال لهما أترضيان أن أقضي بينكما بقضاء رسول الله ﷺ إن رسول الله ﷺ قضى أن الولد للفراش وأحسبه قال فجلدها وجلده وكانا مملوكين
