Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

Hilal bin Umaya, who was one of the three whose repentance Allah accepted, came back from his land in the evening and found a man with his wife. He saw with his own eyes and heard with his own ears, but he did not disturb the man until morning. Then he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, I came to my family in the evening and found a man with them. I saw with my own eyes and heard with my own ears."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked what he had brought to him and found it grievous. Then the verses were revealed, "And those who accuse their wives and have no witnesses except themselves, then the testimony of one of them..." [Nur 24:6–7], both verses in their entirety. When the revelation lifted from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said, "Rejoice, Hilal. Allah عز وجل has provided for you a way out and relief."Hilal said, "I had hoped for that from my Lord."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Send for her."She came, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the verses to them both, admonished them, and informed them that the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe than the punishment of this world.Hilal said, "By Allah, I have spoken the truth about her."She said, "He has lied."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Have them perform the mutual imprecation."Hilal was told, "Bear witness."So he bore witness four times by Allah that he was among the truthful. When it came to the fifth, he was told, "Hilal, fear Allah, for the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter, and this fifth oath is the one that will bring the punishment upon you."He said, "By Allah, Allah will not punish me for this just as He did not have me flogged for it." So he bore witness the fifth time that the curse of Allah be upon him if he were among the liars. Then she was told, "Bear witness."So she bore witness four times by Allah that he was among the liars. When it came to the fifth, she was told, "Fear Allah, for the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter, and this fifth oath is the one that will bring the punishment upon you."She hesitated for a moment, then said, "By Allah, I will not disgrace my people." So she bore witness the fifth time that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he were among the truthful. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ separated them and ruled that her child should not be attributed to any father, that she should not be accused, nor should her child be accused, and that whoever accused her or her child would be subject to the prescribed punishment. He also ruled that she was not entitled to housing or maintenance from him, since they were separated without divorce and not by his death. He said, "If she gives birth to a child who is reddish-brown, of small build, with a slender abdomen and thin legs, then he is Hilal's. But if she gives birth to one who is dark-skinned, with curly hair, of heavy build, with thick legs and full buttocks, then he is the man's with whom she was accused."She gave birth to a child who was dark-skinned, with curly hair, of heavy build, with thick legs and full buttocks. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Were it not for the oaths, I would have dealt with her."Ikrima said, "After that, the child became a leader over Mudar, and he was not attributed to any father."
