Barirah's husband was a free man at the time she was emancipated. She was given the choice, and she said, "I would not wish to remain with him even if I were given such and such."

Tirmidhi narrated it in the Book of Suckling, in the chapter on what has been said about a slave woman who is freed while she has a husband, hadith no. 1155, from the hadith of Ibrahim Nakhai with this wording, and he said, hasan sahih. Ibrahim Nakhai was known to conceal weaknesses in his transmission, and I did not find an explicit statement of his having heard this hadith directly.
