Khuwayla bint Malik bin Thalaba reported,

Khawla said, "My husband Aws bin Samit pronounced against me the oath likening me to his mother, so I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to complain to him about it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept arguing with me on his behalf, saying, 'Fear Allah, for he is your cousin.' I had not yet left when the Quran was revealed, 'Allah has heard the words of she who disputes with you concerning her husband' [Mujadilah 58:1], continuing down to the prescribed penalty."The Prophet said, "Let him set free a slave."She said, "He cannot afford one."He said, "Then let him fast two consecutive months."She said, "Messenger of Allah, he is a very old man with no strength for fasting."He said, "Then let him feed sixty poor people."She said, "He has nothing to give in charity."She continued, "Just then a basket of dates was brought, and I said, 'Messenger of Allah, I will help him with another basket.'He said, 'You have done well. Go and feed sixty poor people with it on his behalf, and return to your cousin.'"The narrator said, "The basket held sixty saa."Abu Dawud remarked about this, "She made the expiation on his behalf without asking his permission."Abu Dawud also said, "This man was the brother of Ubada bin Samit."He said, "The basket is a container holding thirty saa."
