The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Ali, "Ali, do not follow one glance with another. The first is allowed for you, but the second is not."
حدثنا إسمعيل بن موسى الفزاري أخبرنا شريك عن أبي ربيعة الإيادي
قال رسول الله ﷺ لعلي يا علي لا تتبع النظرة النظرة فإن لك الأولى وليست لك الآخرة
[Its chain is daif] Tirmidhi narrated it in the Book of Manners, chapter on the sudden glance, hadith no. 2777, from the hadith of Sharik the judge, with this wording. He said, "Hasan gharib." Hakim graded it sahih according to the criteria of Muslim (2/194), and Dhahabi agreed with him. The hadith has corroborating narrations in Hakim (3/123) and elsewhere. Sharik the judge was known to conceal defects in his chain of transmission, and here he narrated it using the ambiguous "from" formula. The hadith also has a daif corroborating narration in Hakim (3/123).
