I came to Hira and saw the people prostrating to a chieftain of theirs. I said to myself, the Messenger of Allah is more deserving of being prostrated to.So I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "I came to Hira and saw them prostrating to a chieftain of theirs, and you, Messenger of Allah, are more deserving that we prostrate to you."He replied, "Tell me, if you were to pass by my grave, would you prostrate to it?"I said, "No."He said, "Then do not do so. If I were to command anyone to prostrate to another, I would have commanded wives to prostrate to their husbands, because of the right Allah has given husbands over them."
حدثنا عمرو بن عون أخبرنا إسحق بن يوسف عن شريك عن حصين عن الشعبي
أتيت الحيرة فرأيتهم يسجدون لمرزبان لهم فقلت رسول الله أحق أن يسجد له قال فأتيت النبي ﷺ فقلت إني أتيت الحيرة فرأيتهم يسجدون لمرزبان لهم فأنت يا رسول الله أحق أن نسجد لك قال أرأيت لو مررت بقبري أكنت تسجد له قال قلت لا قال فلا تفعلوا لو كنت آمرا أحدا أن يسجد لأحد لأمرت النساء أن يسجدن لأزواجهن لما جعل الله لهم عليهن من الحق
[Its isnad is hasan] Darimi narrated it, no. 1471, from Amr bin Awn through this route, and Hakim graded it sahih, 22/187, and Dhahabi agreed with him. Sharik the judge clearly stated hearing it directly, as recorded by Bayhaqi, 7/21. The basic hadith has supporting narrations in Tirmidhi, no. 1159, and Ibn Hibban, no. 1291, and others.
