[Sahih]. Bayhaqi narrated it, 1/165, from the hadith of Abu Dawud, with the same wording. Tirmidhi also related it in the Book of Purification, chapter on what has been said about water being required only from water, hadith 110 and 111, as did Ibn Majah, hadith 609, from the hadith of Ibn Shihab Zuhri, from Sahl bin Saad, with the same wording. Tirmidhi said, hasan sahih. Zuhri explicitly stated that he heard it directly from Sahl bin Saad, as found with Ibn Khuzayma, hadith 226, and others.
