Abbas bin Abdullah bin Abbas married his daughter to Abdul-Rahman bin Hakam, and Abdul-Rahman married his own daughter to him in exchange, with neither party paying a dowry. Muawiya wrote to Marwan ordering him to separate the two couples, and he said in his letter, "This is the shighar marriage that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade."

أن العباس بن عبد الله بن العباس أنكح عبد الرحمن بن الحكم ابنته وأنكحه عبد الرحمن ابنته وكانا جعلا صداقا فكتب معاوية إلى مروان يأمره بالتفريق بينهما وقال في كتابه هذا الشغار الذي نهى عنه رسول الله ﷺ
