A man said to Ibn Abbas, "Why do the people of this household serve nabidh while their cousins serve milk, honey, and sawiq? Is it stinginess on their part or need?"Ibn Abbas replied, "It is neither stinginess nor need on our part. Rather, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came riding his mount with Usama bin Zayd behind him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for a drink, and he was brought nabidh. He drank from it and handed what remained to Usama bin Zayd, who also drank from it. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'You have done well and acted nobly. Continue to do so.' So this is how we do it. We do not wish to change what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ approved."
حدثنا عمرو بن عون حدثنا خالد عن حميد
قال رجل لابن عباس ما بال أهل هذا البيت يسقون النبيذ وبنو عمهم يسقون اللبن والعسل والسويق أبخل بهم أم حاجة فقال ابن عباس ما بنا من بخل ولا بنا من حاجة ولكن دخل رسول الله ﷺ على راحلته وخلفه أسامة بن زيد فدعا رسول الله ﷺ بشراب فأتي بنبيذ فشرب منه ودفع فضله إلى أسامة بن زيد فشرب منه ثم قال رسول الله ﷺ أحسنتم وأجملتم كذلك فافعلوا فنحن هكذا لا نريد أن نغير ما قاله رسول الله ﷺ
Muslim narrated it in "Hajj," in the chapter on the merit of undertaking the provision of water and praise for those responsible for it, hadith 1316, from the narration of Humayd Tawil, through this same chain.
