The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wipe over the leather socks. Someone other than Muhammad said, "Over the upper surface of the leather socks."
حدثنا محمد بن الصباح البزاز حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن أبي الزناد قال ذكره أبي عن عروة بن الزبير
أن رسول الله ﷺ كان يمسح على الخفين وقال غير محمد على ظهر الخفين

[Its chain is hasan]. Tirmidhi collected it in the Book of Purification, chapter on what has been reported about wiping over the tops of the leather socks, no. 98, from the hadith of Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Zinad, and he said, this hadith is hasan.Dhahabi said regarding Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Zinad that his hadith belongs to the category of hasan (Siyar Alam al-Nubala: 8/168, 169).
