They were with the Prophet ﷺ climbing up a mountain pass. Whenever a man reached the top of the pass, he would call out, "There is no god but Allah, and Allah is the greatest."The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said, "You are not calling upon someone deaf or absent."Then he said, "Abdullah bin Qays," and he mentioned the rest of the meaning.
حدثنا مسدد حدثنا يزيد بن زريع حدثنا سليمان التيمي عن أبي عثمان
أنهم كانوا مع النبي ﷺ وهم يتصعدون في ثنية فجعل رجل كلما علا الثنية نادى لا إله إلا الله والله أكبر فقال نبي الله ﷺ إنكم لا تنادون أصم ولا غائبا ثم قال يا عبد الله بن قيس فذكر معناه
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Divine Decree, Chapter: "There is no power and no strength except with Allah," hadith no. 6610, and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Remembrance and Supplication, Chapter: The Recommendation of Lowering the Voice in Remembrance Except in Certain Places, etc., hadith no. 2704, from the hadith of Abu Uthman Nahdi, with the same chain.
