Ubayy bin Kaab reported,

The Prophet ﷺ was at the pond of Banu Ghifar when Jibreel ﷺ came to him and said, "Allah commands you to have your community recite the Quran in one mode."He replied, "I ask Allah for His pardon and forgiveness. My community cannot bear that."Then Jibreel came to him a second time and said something similar, until it reached seven modes. He said, "Allah commands you to have your community recite the Quran in seven modes, and whichever mode they recite it in, they will have done correctly."

أن النبي ﷺ كان عند أضاة بني غفار فأتاه جبريل ﷺ فقال إن الله عز وجل يأمرك أن تقرئ أمتك على حرف قال أسأل الله معافاته ومغفرته إن أمتي لا تطيق ذلك ثم أتاه ثانية فذكر نحو هذا حتى بلغ سبعة أحرف قال إن الله يأمرك أن تقرئ أمتك على سبعة أحرف فأيما حرف قرءوا عليه فقد أصابوا
