I heard Hisham bin Hakeem bin Hizam reciting Surah al-Furqan in a manner different from how I recited it, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had taught me to recite it. I almost rushed to confront him, but I held back until he finished. Then I seized him by his cloak and brought him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.I said, "Messenger of Allah, I heard this man reciting Surah al-Furqan in a way different from how you taught me to recite it."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Recite."So he recited in the manner I had heard him recite. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It was revealed this way."Then he said to me, "Recite."So I recited, and he said, "It was revealed this way."Then he said, "Indeed, this Quran was revealed in seven modes, so recite whatever is easy from it."
Bukhari recorded it in the Book of Disputes, chapter "The Statements of Disputants Against One Another," hadith no. 2419, and Muslim in the Book of the Prayer of Travelers, chapter "Clarifying that the Quran Was Revealed in Seven Modes and Explaining Their Meaning," hadith no. 818, from the hadith of Malik through this route. It is also in the Muwatta (Yahya's recension), 1/201, and Qanabi's recension, pages 13 and 135.
