We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as part of the delegation from Thakeef. The Ahlaf clan stayed with Mughira bin Shuba, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lodged the Banu Malik in a tent of his.Musaddad said that the narrator was among the delegation from Thakeef who came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, "Every night after the evening prayer, he would come and speak with us."Abu Saeed added that he would stand on his feet until he had to shift his weight from one leg to the other due to standing for so long. Most of what he spoke to us about was the hardship he had faced from his own people, the Quraysh. Then he would say, "It was not equal. We were weak and humiliated."Musaddad's version adds, "in Mecca. When we went out to Medina, the fortunes of war alternated between us and them. Sometimes we prevailed over them, and sometimes they prevailed over us."One night he came later than the time he usually came to us, so we said, "You came late to us tonight."He replied, "My portion of the Quran came due upon me, and I did not want to come until I had completed it."Aws said, "I asked the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ how they divided the Quran into portions. They said, 'Three, five, seven, nine, eleven, and thirteen surahs, and the portion of al-Mufassal on its own.'"
