A man from the people of Basra reported that he witnessed Samura bin Jundab deliver a sermon one day. Samura said:While a young man from the Ansar and I were shooting at our targets, the sun, when it was at the height of two or three spear-lengths above the horizon to the eye of the observer, grew dark until it became like the tannumah plant.One of us said to his companion, "Let us go to the mosque, for by Allah, the state of this sun will surely cause the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to bring forth something new concerning his community."So we hurried off, and there he was, already out in the open. He stepped forward and led us in prayer. He stood with us for the longest standing he had ever observed with us in any prayer, during which we could not hear his voice. Then he bowed with us for the longest bowing he had ever performed with us in any prayer, during which we could not hear his voice. Then he prostrated with us for the longest prostration he had ever made with us in any prayer, during which we could not hear his voice. Then he did the same in the second rakah.The clearing of the sun coincided with his sitting in the second rakah. Then he gave the salam, then stood up, praised Allah and extolled Him, bore witness that there is no god but Allah, and bore witness that he himself was His servant and Messenger.Then Ahmad bin Yunus continued with the sermon of the Prophet ﷺ.
حدثنا أحمد بن يونس حدثنا زهير حدثنا الأسود بن قيس
من أهل البصرة أنه شهد خطبة يوما لسمرة بن جندب قال قال سمرة بينما أنا وغلام من الأنصار نرمي غرضين لنا حتى إذا كانت الشمس قيد رمحين أو ثلاثة في عين الناظر من الأفق اسودت حتى آضت كأنها تنومة فقال أحدنا لصاحبه انطلق بنا إلى المسجد فوالله ليحدثن شأن هذه الشمس لرسول الله ﷺ في أمته حدثا قال فدفعنا فإذا هو بارز فاستقدم فصلى فقام بنا كأطول ما قام بنا في صلاة قط لا نسمع له صوتا قال ثم ركع بنا كأطول ما ركع بنا في صلاة قط لا نسمع له صوتا ثم سجد بنا كأطول ما سجد بنا في صلاة قط لا نسمع له صوتا ثم فعل في الركعة الأخرى مثل ذلك قال فوافق تجلي الشمس جلوسه في الركعة الثانية قال ثم سلم ثم قام فحمد الله وأثنى عليه وشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وشهد أنه عبده ورسوله ثم ساق أحمد بن يونس خطبة النبي ﷺ
Its isnad is hasan. Tirmidhi transmitted it in the Book of Prayer, chapter on how the recitation is done during the eclipse, no. 562, and Nasai, no. 1485, and Ibn Majah, no. 1264, from the hadith of Aswad bin Qays as narrated above, and Tirmidhi said, no. 597, 598, hasan sahih gharib. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, no. 1397, as did Ibn Hibban, and Hakim graded it according to the standard of the two Shaykhs, 1/329, 331, and Dhahabi agreed with him.
