Ali, meaning Ibn Abu Talib, came in to me after he had relieved himself and called for water for ablution. We brought him a vessel containing water and placed it before him.He said, "Ibn Abbas, shall I show you how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform ablution?"I replied, "Yes, please."He tilted the vessel over his hand and washed it, then he put his right hand in and poured water with it onto the other, then he washed both palms. He rinsed his mouth and sniffed water into his nose and blew it out. Then he placed both hands together into the vessel, took a handful of water, and threw it onto his face. He inserted his thumbs into the front of his ears, then did so a second time, then a third in the same manner. Then he took a handful of water with his right palm and poured it onto the front of his head, letting it run down over his face. Then he washed his forearms up to the elbows three times each. Then he wiped his head and the backs of his ears. Then he put both hands in together, took a handful of water, and threw it onto his foot, which still had the sandal on, and rubbed the foot with it. He did the same with the other foot.I asked, "Even with the sandals on?"He said, "Even with the sandals on."I asked again, "Even with the sandals on?"He said, "Even with the sandals on."I asked once more, "Even with the sandals on?"He said, "Even with the sandals on."

[Its isnad is hasan]. Ahmad narrated it, 1/82, from the hadith of Muhammad bin Ishaq through this route, and he stated explicitly that he heard it. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, no. 153, as did Ibn Hibban (Mawarid), no. 153.
