The call to prayer used to be made before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he sat upon the pulpit on Friday, at the door of the mosque, and likewise during the time of Abu Bakr and Umar. He then went on to narrate something similar to the hadith of Yunus.
حدثنا النفيلي حدثنا محمد بن سلمة عن محمد بن إسحق عن الزهري

[Its isnad is daif due to Muhammad bin Ishaq, previously mentioned at 313, and the wording is his. Tabarani narrated it in 146/7 with a sahih isnad, from Sulayman Taymi, from Zuhri, with the same content, and in it, "The call to prayer during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr and Umar ا was given at the pulpit." And this is the correct version.
